Life-threatening genital infection found in some using common diabetes drugs, FDA says
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning on Wednesday that it’s found cases of a rare but life-threatening, flesh-eating genital infection in people taking a certain type of diabetes drugs.
Three of the drugs covered by the warning are the commonly used Invokana, Farxiga and Jardiance, according to Bloomberg.
Others are made by Bristol-Myers Squibb, Merck & Co and Pfizer Inc., Reuters reported. The full list covered by the warning is on the FDA website.
They belong to a class of type 2 diabetes drugs called SGLT2 inhibitors that “lower blood sugar by causing the kidneys to remove sugar from the body through the urine,” the FDA said in its safety announcement.
The FDA estimated that 1.7 million people in the United States last year got a prescription for an SGLT2 inhibitor from a retail pharmacy.
Between March of 2013 – the first year this class of drugs was approved – and May 2018 the FDA “identified 12 cases of Fournier’s gangrene in patients taking an SGLT2 inhibitor,” the agency reported.
All were hospitalized and needed surgery, the FDA said. One patient died….

Elon Musk: I’m about to announce a ‘Neuralink’ product that connects your brain to computers
Elon Musk says he will soon announce a Neuralink product that can make anyone superhuman by connecting their brains to a computer.
He says Neuralink increases the data rate between the brain and computers and will give humans a better shot at competing with AI.
Musk made the comments before he smoked weed and drank on Joe Rogan’s podcast.
Elon Musk smoked pot and drank whiskey on the Joe Rogan podcast and said he’s going to soon announce a new “Neuralink” product that can make anyone superhuman.
“I think we’ll have something interesting to announce in a few months … that’s better than anyone thinks is possible,” the Tesla CEO said on “Joe Rogan Experience.” “Best case scenario, we effectively merge with AI.”
Musk, whose enterprises include a company called Neuralink, says his new technology will be able to seamlessly combine humans with computers, giving us a shot at becoming “symbiotic” with artificial intelligence.
Musk argued that since we’re already practically attached to our phones, we’re already cyborgs. We’re just not as smart as we could be because the data link between the information we can get from our phones to our brains isn’t as fast as it could be….
Yahoo email caught secretly scanning user emails to build psych profiles to sell to advertisers
Yahoo is scanning people’s email for information to sell to advertisers, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.
The tech giant scans more than 200 million Yahoo Mail inboxes for information about what people have bought, such as receipts from department stores or automotive loan companies, the Journal reported Tuesday. Executives at Yahoo, which was bought by Verizon in June 2017 and placed under its Oath umbrella, have been pitching interest-based advertising to marketers.
Yahoo puts emails into different categories; for example if someone receives a flight confirmation, they might be put into a “frequent traveler” group. That person might then see advertising for hotel chains that might appear on other websites. AOL, also owned by Oath, scans emails in this way as well, the Journal’s report said. Data are aggregated and anonymized, so advertisers wouldn’t have access to an individual’s information.
This type of scanning only applies to emails from organizations and not personal messages, according to Oath’s vice president of data, measurements and insights, Doug Sharp, who told the Journal that Yahoo’s research shows people prefer personalized advertising. “Email is an expensive system,” he added. “I think it’s reasonable and ethical to expect the ‘value exchange,’ if you’ve got this mail service and there is advertising going on.”….
