More 200 dead or missing, as historic rainfall leaves authorities in a state of confusion, Japan

  • Record rainfall was recorded at 118 official observations posts in the 72 hours to Sunday, July 8. The city of Uwajima in Ehime Prefecture received 364 mm (14.3 inches) of rain between 05:00 and 07:00 local time Sunday, approximately 1.5 times the average monthly rainfall for July in just 2 hours. Many regions received three times their usual precipitation for the month of July.
  • The scale of the disaster is on the same level as that of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.
  • More than 73 000 rescuers were mobilized. Self-Defence Forces are still performing search and rescue operations and even though the rainfall event is now over, the death toll is expected to rise.
  • Authorities are reportedly still in a state of confusion and trying to asses what happened and who is to blame for one of the country’s worst flooding disasters in history.
  • The frequency of heavy rain-linked disasters is on the rise, and we are facing a world where the rules learned from your experiences no longer apply.
  • If there are still some of you who think the government will (or should or could) save you during events such as this one, take a look at what happened and think again.

Some 160 000 people were ordered or advised to evacuate on July 5 after the Japan Meteorological Agency issued warnings that record rainfall is expected across the country.

On the same day, The Mainichi reports, opposition parties noted that prime minister and members of his ruling party took part in a party gathering, and questioned whether they had a proper sense of crisis. Even some officials in the ruling government coalition criticized the response as lax.

Some 12 hours later, during the predawn hours of July 6, 5 prefectures sought immediate disaster response assistance from the Self-Defence Forces as the Sun unveiled first glimpses into the scale of destruction that is about to occur….

The world is boiling: Heatwave shatters records in parts of California, kills 54 in Quebec (Canada), melts roads in Great Britain, engulfs Iran and sets temperature record in Africa

This summer is going crazy and heatwaves are triggering dramatic living conditions around the world. While major heat wave is bringing record-breaking temperatures to Southern California, another heatwave has already killed 54 people in Quebec, Canada, and Britain is baking and its roads are melting. Finally, Africa has witnessed it’s highest temperature ever recorded, 124.3F, in Algeria and temperatures are breaking new records in Iran. The world is boiling, water is disappearing… Is the end coming? Let’s start with the USA:

A major heat wave is bringing record-breaking temperatures to Southern California. By 1 p.m., temps in Woodland Hills hit 115 degrees, shattering a record of 106 set in 1976. Heat records for Burbank, Van Nuys and downtown Los Angeles fell early. Downtown Los Angeles hit 95 degrees before 11 a.m., breaking the previous record of 94 degrees set in 1992…

In Berkshire, a bin lorry sunk into a hole in a road after the summer heat melted the asphalt. In Tyne and Wear,an unnamed 24-year-old man’s foot became stuck after the tarmac beneath him melted and gave way.

He became stuck up to his thigh and had to call 999 to be freed. – ITV

An intense heat wave is shattering temperature records in Iran and the Caucasus nations of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia, causing power shortages that are adding to discomfort in the region.

Weather experts on July 6 said the heat wave is the result of a high-pressure dome or heat dome that formed over the Eurasian region and reaches as far north as southern Russia, where temperatures hit a record high for June on June 28….

Extremely dangerous Typhoon “Maria” heading toward Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan and China

Very Strong Typhoon “Maria,” still a Super Typhoon according to the JTWC, is heading toward Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan and China. Its center is expected to pass right over or very near Miyakojima, Japan around 06:00 UTC on July 10, just north of northern Taiwan and capital Taipei some 12 hours later and make landfall over east-central China with the intensity of around 185 km/h (115 mph), Category 4 hurricane equivalent.

At 09:00 UTC on July 9, the center of Typhoon “Maria” was located approximately 600 km (380 miles) southeast of Okinawa, Japan and has tracked WNW at 31 km/h (20 mph) over the past 6 hours. The cyclone had maximum sustained winds of 240 km/h (150 mph) and gusts to 296 km/h (184 mph). The maximum significant wave height was 12.8 m (42 feet)….

Grocery Giant Kroger To Begin Home Delivery Service Of Groceries By Partnering With Driverless Car Company Nuro

Kroger and Nuro will begin their partnership this fall. Cosset did not detail a timeline, but did say it would be “aggressive.” It will experiment with the technology in areas that both overlap with and are separate from where it plans to build out its Ocado warehouses. “Where you have high density, an autonomous vehicle may not be the best solution,” he noted. Eventually, though “you can expect the roll out of Ocado as well as fulfillment capabilities, autonomous delivery … to be available to 100 percent of America,” said Cosset….

“But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.” Daniel 12: 4 (KJV)

The partnership comes as the U.S.’s largest grocery players continue to tackle the expensive challenge of “last mile delivery” — the final step in getting a product to a shopper’s home. It is a feat that is particularly perilous when dealing with fragile products like fresh food. It is further complicated by populations that vary wildly across the U.S, with some far less dense that others.

Walmart recently said it was partnering with Postmates to expand its online grocery delivery program. Amazon announced early Thursday plans to partner with entrepreneurs who run their own local delivery networks of up to 40 delivery vans. It is not clear whether it will use that network for food delivery….

HATE SPEECH: Christian Doctor David Mackereth In UK Fired And Deemed ‘Unfit To Work’ For Crime Of Saying Gender Is Determined At Birth

Dr Mackereth, a Reformed Baptist, started training in May to become a health and disability assessor for the government department. His role would have involved compiling independent reports about the health of those he interviewed who were claiming disability benefits. But matters began to sour when his instructor said reports must only refer to the patient or client by the gender that person self-identifies as. ‘I said that I had a problem with this. I believe that gender is defined by biology and genetics and that as a Christian the Bible teaches us that God made humans male or female. I could have kept my mouth shut but it was the right time to raise it,’ said Dr Mackereth….

New blood tests can reveal your life expectancy

It could be just the thing for those who need a nudge to start ticking items off their bucket list; scientists have developed a blood test that reveals how long a person has left to live.

The test draws on nine biomarkers found in the blood that can be used to calculate the biological age of a person’s body – that is, how old it seems from the way it functions, as opposed to how long it has been out of the womb.

Researchers at Yale University in Connecticut found that the test was a more accurate predictor of life expectancy than a person’s chronological age or any of the biomarkers individually.

Morgan Levine, a pathologist at Yale, said the test could be used to identify people who are ageing faster than normal, meaning they are at greater risk than expected of disease and an early death.

“We showed that even among people who have no diseases, who are presumably healthy, we can still pick up differences in life expectancy. It’s capturing something preclinical, before any diseases present themselves,” she said.

“It’s picking up how old you look physiologically. Maybe you’re 65 years old but physiologically you look more like a 70 year old, so your mortality risk is more like that of a 70 year old.”….
