Toll Rises To 34 Dead As Catastrophic Fires Spread In Northern California..

One teen died when his family tried to outrun the fire. An older woman stopped breathing in her husband’s arms as they fought to survive in a pool…

‘Bromances’ are threatening heterosexual relationships, researchers say, as men surveyed report sharing beds, cuddling and getting more emotional satisfaction out of male friendships than those with women.

The University of Winchester interviewed 30 undergraduates, and found 28 would rather talk about emotional issues with their male friends rather than girlfriends. The majority also said it was easier to resolve conflicts with men, and admitted they kept secrets from partners which they shared with male friends….

Twenty-nine of them said they experienced cuddling with a same sex friend and many said they often slept in the same bed, according to the research published in the Men and Masculinities journal.

One man called ‘Aaron’ told researchers: “We hug when we meet, and we sleep in the same bed when we have sleepovers. Everyone knows it, and nobody is bothered by it because they do it as well.”

When asked to describe the difference between a ‘bromance’ and a romance, ‘Bob’ answered: “Sex really. That’s all.”….

Desperate Puerto Ricans are drinking water from a hazardous-waste site

Jose Luis Rodriguez waited in line Friday to fill plastic jugs in the back of his pickup truck with water for drinking, doing the dishes and bathing.

But there is something about this water Rodriguez didn’t know: It was being pumped to him by water authorities from a federally designated hazardous-waste site, CNN learned after reviewing Superfund documents and interviewing federal and local officials.

Rodriguez, 66, is so desperate for water that this news didn’t startle him.
“I don’t have a choice,” he said. “This is the only option I have.”…

Penguin catastrophe leaves thousands of chicks dead with only two survivors

A penguin colony in Antarctica has suffered a massive breeding failure, with only two chicks surviving the disaster.

Terre Adélie (Adélie Land) is home to more than 18,000 pairs of Adélie penguins, but this year almost all the seabirds’ babies starved to death, a situation one expert described as “Tarantino does Happy Feet.”

The World Wildlife Fund said unseasonably extensive amounts of sea ice around the colony in East Antarctica had forced the adult penguins to travel further than normal to forage for food.

“This devastating event contrasts with the image that many people might have of penguins,” said Rod Downie, Head of Polar Programmes at WWF. “It’s more like ‘Tarantino does Happy Feet’, with dead penguin chicks strewn across a beach in Adélie Land.”

“The impact of this catastrophic event is confined to this specific colony of Adélie penguins, predictions are that the Antarctic will get warmer and this may pose different challenges in the longer term,” Downie added….

Federal Judge Rules Handcuffing Little Kids Above Their Elbows Is Unconstitutional

The cuffs twisted the arms of the 8-year-boy behind his back.

A school resource officer in Kentucky who handcuffed young children acted unreasonably and violated the children’s constitutional rights, a federal judge ruled this week.

Two children, ages 8 and 9, were handcuffed by Kevin Sumner, a school resource officer with Covington Independent Public Schools. They were cuffed behind their backs, and the cuffs were placed above their elbows because the restraints would have slipped off their wrists. Video of the handcuffing of the 8-year-old went viral after it was made public by the American Civil Liberties Union in 2015.

“Oh, God. Ow, that hurts,” the young boy said as Sumner applied the cuffs, which pulled the child’s shoulders back tightly. The officer told the boy he would “suffer the consequences” if he didn’t do as he was asked….

Man Fired For Bringing a Watermelon to Work, Deemed Racists By Co-Workers

Watermelon, when in season, is available at every grocery store. At many grocery stores, you can buy it whole, quartered, or even cut into rind free, individually wrapped pieces. But, if you show up with one at a certain Detroit firehouse, you’ll be fired. That’s what happened when firefighter trainee Robert Pattison brought a whole watermelon as a present for his new co-workers.

Traditionally, probationary firefighters bring in a gift for the existing group. Donuts are the top choice but are not required. The firefighters at Engine 55 at Joy and Southfield in Detroit are 90 percent African American and some took the watermelon gift as a racist statement. They complained, and Pattison was fired.Fire Commissioner Eric Jones Jones said:

The Designer of the iPhone Worries That His Grandkids Will Think He’s the Guy ‘That Destroyed Society’

Tony Fadell didn’t anticipate the impact his creation would have on the world.

Tony Fadell helped design the iPod, the iPhone and the iPod. Not that his work rests easily with him.

“I worry what my grandkids are going to think,” he told Anderson Cooper at Monday’s Mindfulness in America Summit. Will it be “He’s the guy that destroyed society,” he wondered aloud, or will he be revered?

The impact of the iPhone was not something he—or his team—could have imagined. “We wanted to be successful, but I don’t think any of us thought it was going to be this successful,” he explained, harkening back to a decade ago when his team was first rolling out the device.

They were worried about taking on Nokia and BlackBerry, two competitors the iPhone has basically buried. But now, the iPhone is “pervasive in everything we do,”…

Dozens of grenades & 1,000s of bullets stolen from IDF base, 2nd heist in two weeks

Thousands of bullets and at least 2 dozen grenades for underbarrel launchers have been stolen from an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) base in the Upper Galilee. It’s the second such incident this month, with a base in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights targeted two weeks ago.

At least 2,000 M16 assault rifle bullets as well as 24 grenades for a single shot M203 launcher were stolen from a military bunker at the IDF base in the Upper Galilee, according to Israeli media.

The yet unknown thieves allegedly infiltrated the base at around 8:00pm Tuesday. The breach was discovered after an alert was triggered by an alarm on the perimeter fence. It later emerged that four of the locks at the ammunition storehouse had been cut.
